As Minnesotans, we know how our climate can swing from one extreme to the other throughout the year. We live with bitterly cold winters with biting wind chill factors in winter and oppressive summer heat waves with uncomfortable humidity in the summers.
Our bodies are subject to these extremes in temperature since we live our lives, of course, above ground. But what many people do not realize is that the temperature below ground remains fairly constant, no matter the climate or season. The ground absorbs nearly 50% of the sun’s heat as it hits the earth’s surface. The enables the ground to maintain optimum temperature consistency.
The concept is actually quite simple. A series of underground pipes is buried below the surface and filled with a water-based solution in what are often referred to as loops. During a heating cycle, the heat pump uses the underground pipes to pull heat from the ground. The heat pump then distributes it through a conventional duct system as warm air. In the cooling cycle, the process is reversed with the system providing cool air into the home while expelling heat from the air in your home and pushing it back through the underground loops.
